Documents and Explanations of the Memorial Places

The book "Orte der Erinnerung" (Memorial places) was presented to the public in November 2007. Since then it has provided a compact guidebook to the places persecution and resistance during the Nazi-tyranny in the Hanover are. We are pleased that the book could be presented online only a year after publication - and can thus be continually updated and extended.

First you will find a section explaining how to use the website and guidebook. As an orientation assistance there is a colour scheme that matches the one in the book.

Using the two maps which accompany the book, you can get an impression of the span of the memorial places. The map of the great region of Hanover illustrates the memorial places in thirteen towns and villages of the area around Hanover. The city of Hanover is presented on a separate, more detailed map. These maps can be printed. Directions to the memorial places can be obtained using Google Maps.

Two introductory greetings from the regional chief administrator Hauke Jagau and Hanover's Lord Mayor Stephan Weil commemorate the extraordinary support for this book project from the region and city of Hanover - not least through financial support.

The introduction informs you about how the memorial places were chosen by us and what sort of information you can find in the guidebook.

Next you will find a summary of the historical background covering the whole area with themes such as the rise to power and persecution, concentration camps and forced labour, resistance and individual groups of victims. Here you will find many direct links to concrete local examples and memorial places.

At Places A-Z is the main part of the guidebook. From Barsinghausen to Wunstorf, all the local memorial places are described and illustrated, and listed with contact details and directions.

Three further sections provide an overview of regional memorial days, of the Stolpersteine (a memorial art project), street names and signs and of the biographies A-Z. Via school projects, we aim to motivate young people to research the fates of persecuted people in our region. The results can be documented in the sections with biographies.
